Foewi slows the revolution of a soft, resonant loop for us to appreciate in all its majesty at the very start of the track. The Brazil-based producer cloaks the sound in a thick layer of warmth, so much so that it seems to call to us from a past life. Those familiar with Foewi’s out will know the pull towards more ambient factions of synthwave. A rapid release of material this summer exemplified a hypnagogic aesthetic with acute attention to texture and atmosphere. Here the artist wastes no time in demonstrating the level of control over the resonance and frequency of a sound.

The note is sent into a spinning frenzy once again before disappearing. We float along with a pillow-soft pad. Suddenly the drums hit. The bass drum makes a slight incision into the melodious elements of the track as the hi-hats follow up with engaging tinkering either side of the bass drums. A fizzing bassline pokes its way through, bobbing along with percussion. A tinge of field recorded sound sits at the fringe of the instrumentation, teasing us into a daydreaming state of mind.

Foewi hits us with another layer, a phasing melody that slips in and out of sight. The artist’s adept ability to create a sense of calm, unfaltering rhythm pulls the listener in. Though the drums are beautifully organic, there is no sign of fault or flaw. Then all else falls away, we ascend along with the thick, cloudy notes as they turn into crystalline veneer and disappear into the ether.

Another addition to this heavily underrated artist’s back catalogue.
